Drunk by Noelle
There is no doubt in my mind that Drunk is one of the best hanfics ever written. It, without question, will always be my personal favourite. At the time I began reading Drunk, I hadn’t really experienced much hanfic, other than the few, odd stories about the girl next door who falls in love with her famous neighbour/s. Drunk was a refreshing find, something intelligent and well written, with a plot that left you wondering until the very end. I instantly fell in love with the characters- each had their own identities, their own faults, problems and histories- and even though a few cliche plot twists were thrown in here and there, there was always something about the way it was written that made it feel original and unique. The writer presents emotion with such beautiful and real description that there was not a moment where I was not completely involved in the story. I love everything about Drunk, and hope that one day, I can produce something so well crafted and exquisitely detailed.

Something That Can’t Be Explained by Brittney
I’d only just begun reading hanfic when I stumbled upon this story at aloneinthepretense.org. It was easy to fall in love with Brittney’s easy writing style and the humorous characters and situations she created. The thing I love most about Brittney’s writing, is that she can take an ordinary situation - the hatred between a girl and the Hanson brothers - and turn it into something magical yet realistic. The dialogue never ceased to entertain me, and each character was very defined in the way they reacted to others. And what’s a good romance without moments of heart ache, tears and drama? This story found the perfect balance between the fun and entertaining, and the serious and dramatic. Something That Can’t Be Explained was one of the reasons I began to write hanfic, after enjoying the humour and light hearted romance this story provided. Definitely a recommended read.

Perfectly Imperfect by Jess
My friend Jess is an amazing writer, and anyone who has read her stuff will surely agree with me. Perfectly Imperfect was her break out hanfic, about a woman named Brandi who has more insecurities than I could name. The way that Jess constructs the character of Brandi, alone drew me into this hanfic. We all go though times in our lives when we feel unsure of ourselves, and Jess captured that perfectly in this character, and the way she expresses and feels about herself, making it easy to relate to her in more ways than one. In a story of romance and self discovery, we are exposed to Jess’ true talent in constructing a realistic and captivating setting, with hilarious and entertaining dialogue and characters. When reading this story, I’d always find myself cheering on Brandi as she exposed more and more of herself to the risk of finding true love. Not being bias, but Jess is one of my all time favourite authors, and I swear if you don’t catch up on her work, you’e the one missing out!

Perfect Girl by Kaylee
Perfect Girl is definitely a fic I could read over and over until I’d memorized every single word of the story. Kaylee is an amazing writer, with the ability to construct a world that despite its unlikely plotlines - a girl from a lotto winning family who was kidnapped as a child - is completely realistic. I’ve always been a sucker for a romantic drama, and in reading in this story, I was on the edge of my seat waiting and praying for Keavy and Zac to reveal their true feelings for each other. Even more important than the romantic struggle, however, is an obvious struggle in Keavy to find herself throughout the story. The readers are exposed to the inner workings of Keavy’s mind, where it makes it easy for us to watch her transform from insecure and somewhat bitter, to strong and confident. The plot of story develops more and more as Keavy herself develops, which Kaylee has constructed cleverly. An amazing and inspiring read.

Let You Go By Becca
Read and reviewed for The JSOR Bookclub
I always find that writing short stories makes it very hard to develop character relationships and real emotions and histories, and I think in this story Becca has done that really well. In short stories I believe the easiest mistake you can make is to waste words on lines and phrases that don’t really mean anything or add anything to the story, and Becca certainly has made the right selections to bring the story to an effective ending. Very emotive; a great, short read!
